Most weekends, the 4th Avenue beach is host to a loose-knit clan of volleyball desparados, playing fierce but friendly pick-up matches between endless combinations of teams paired via the "4th Avenue Method" of selecting partners.

Several times a year, though, something resembling a tournament happens. Besides the Century, these have included the Rusty Nail, Fools' Folly, Brett Gardner, Halloween, and Lizard (before it went upscale). Many legends have been passed down through the years. Some of them may even be true.
